the 2005 Staff
I’m Momma
P the director at VBYC. You’ll see Veda and I
all over camp throughout the summer. I may be joining your canoe class, playing
some cards on the picnic table, walking cabin row during horizontal hour,
or helping prepare your meals. I love the spirit of camp; each summer it offers
the opportunity to create new friends and wonderful memories. This summer
is our 55th year of camping! The entire staff and I can’t wait to get started
creating summer memories.
Hi! My name is Michelle Gailliez and this will be my second summer out at VBYC as the Program
Director. Camps have been a big part of my life and I can't think of a better place to spend the summer than VBYC!! I love the outdoors and have a great deal of interest and respect for nature, and camp is the perfect place to instill those values into kids. I love being around kids and I will be starting my teaching career in the fall. My goal for this summer is that all of the kids have a wonderful time, come away with lots of memories, and really learn to enjoy the great outdoors!!
I'm Sean Salefske and I'm back at camp for another fun-filled summer. You might not recognize me because I grew hair since the last week of camp. But I was there, and I was lifeguarding. Last summer was the most fun I've had in a summer, but it was also my first summer at camp, and I am looking forward to this summer at camp. This year though I will be teaching Archery and Rifelry, and having a fun time doing it. I can't wait until summer starts, and I hope to see many new and returning faces.
Hey guys! My name is Neil Curiel, and I am returning to VBYC as the Arts
and Crafts instructor. This summer is going to be a blast. We're going to be making some mad fun crazy art, so get ready everyone. ARTS AND CRAFTS RULE! :D
My name is Eric Pasman, and I will be returning for my third year as the canoeing instructor and SIT coordinator at Van Buren Youth Camp. This summer will also mark my fourth as a waterfront lifeguard at VBYC. In class I aim for one goal, having fun. This means not just going out in a canoe and paddling around a lake (although it's the main part of the class), it means teaching the children all I can about enjoying nature, being safe, and taking as much from a class as possible. In class I teach the basics of canoeing this includes how to put on a life jacket, sizing a paddle, paddle strokes, and parts of a canoe while on land. As well as safely entering and exiting a canoe, and movement on the water. I also strive to communicate the idea of nature to the students during class. By being in the water and enjoying the activities it has to offer I hope to show the children how important it is that we maintain our greatest resource on Earth, water.

something new, this year you can find me down in the Camp Store, around camp
hanging out, or cooking Dinner! I’m
excited to become camp’s evening cook, but most of all I can’t wait
to get started on another summer out at VBYC. I hope everyone is as excited
as I am!

Hi, my name is Seth Field and I work in the kitchen. I've been coming to camp and counseling for four years so chances are if you have ever been to camp you probably know me. I love the kitchen and I love campers and you are all welcome to drop by the kitchen door to say hello. This is Seth Field from the kitchen, over and out.
Hi my name is Kate Petrovic and I will be working as a kitchen girl this summer. Although this is my first year on staff, this is my 8th summer out at camp. My main duties will be to help around the kitchen (from cooking food to washing dishes), and to help out anywhere else that I am needed. I am very excited to see familiar faces and to meet many new ones. This is going to be a great summer!
Hey Kids! This is Anna Schmitt reporting for duty this year
as a lovely kitchen girl who plans to tailor finger lickin' good food to your
hungry needs! Though I have got my fun on as a cabin counselor a couple years
back, I am ready to be legit and officially have a fantastic time with all the
VBYC kids and crew ALL summer long! So don't be shy! Give me a holla when strollin'
by the kitchen. But beware, not only do I plan on doing my duty in the kitchen
but you may spy me where ever the fun is going down this summer at VBYC a.k.a.
EVERYWHERE :o).
Hi, my name is Terri Smock and I’m going to
be a kitchen girl this summer. This is going to be my first year on staff but
I’ve heard plenty
of stories about the magic of camp from VBYC staff that come up to CMU and talk
about nothing else. So I’m excited to be a part of it myself. I can’t
wait for the summer to begin!
My name is Joe Schmidt, and I am coming back to Van Buren Youth Camp to serve as both a life. This will mark my second summer of work at the camp. As a lifeguard at the camp, I will be teaching swim classes during the day, while also keeping watch over the swimming area during other designated times in which the campers will be on the waterfront. I look forward to what will surly be a tremendous summer for both me and the many campers.
I’m Tom O’ Rourke a lifeguard on
the waterfront. This is my third summer at VBYC. I look forward to polar bears,
swim lesson, crazy water games, afternoon choices, and another summer of Capture
the Flag. Can’t wait to see all of the return campers and new faces ? get those
voices warmed up for a chorus or two of John Jacob!
Hey All I am Moriah Hathaway-Casey, aka Mo. Well Van Buren Youth Camp has been my home away from home for 10 years, as a camper, counselor and now staff. One of my favorite places on camp is the waterfront, which is where I will be all summer long. Yes, I am an addition to the wonderful VBYC waterfront staff. I anticipate all of your smiles, and the new stories you have to share. See you soon.
Yo everyone. My name is Jo Mollhagen-Jaksa, known as Jo Mama, and this is my second year being on staff at Van Buren Youth Camp. Last year I was a wonderful kitchen girl and this year I am... (dun dun duun) Nature Instructor and mystery? So basically I will be teaching the kids about nature, or have some fun activites dealing with nature and all that jazz. As for mystery... who knows? I will also be helping everyone out where I am needed. I am one very excited kid for this summer, and I cannot wait to see everyone out there at camp. Hazzah!
Hi my name is Margaret Foster I'm beginning my fifth summer working
as Office
Manager. I'm the one you hear on the phone answering questions. In my
free time I tend to flowers and do any jobs that call me. I attended this
camp as a 10 year old and have been everything from a camper to Staff and
now Office Manager. I'm looking forward to seeing my grandson attend camp
for the first time at Arrowhead. Both his parents were campers and Staff
Members.
Greetings young campers, Jason Groth here. I'll be showing campers how to handle a rifle safely all summer. I have come to camp for several years and am looking forward to making it your best week ever. I like Sour patch kids and old cars, and yes I do take huge Sour Patch Kid bribes. This is Groth from Camp, Out!
Hello everybody, my name is Phil Tolbert and I will be the song
and dance teacher this upcoming summer, as well as, head counselor. This is my second summer out at VBYC, for last year I worked in the kitchen, so that may be why my name doesn’t ring a bell. As the song and dance instructor, I will be teaching each one of you how to do a few traditional camp dances and songs, and even a few surprises. I look forward to what will surly be a tremendous summer for both me and the many campers I will have to opportunity to meet and work with.
Hi my name is Ben Husted, and I will
be your sports instructor this summer. I have been coming to camp for
ten years; I have been a camper, a counselor, and a SIT. I look forward to seeing
all of my buddies back this year. I enjoy playing and socializing in different
environments. Can’t wait to see you all this summer!
Hello! I am Jen Peck and I am the waterfront director out at camp this summer. This marks my 15th summer being involved at VBYC, either as a camper, counselor, or staff member and I am so excited to continue to pass on the spirit of camp. My primary jobs along with the other certified lifeguards are to ensure the safety of the children while in the water. Also, being W.S.I. certified, I will aid in helping kids learn more about swim strokes and water safety for future swim experiences. Finally, of course, I will be helping the entire staff and counselors make sure that every camper has a fun and memorable week out at camp. I can’t wait to see all of you this summer and get excited, it’s going to be a GREAT one! (even better then last year, if you can imagine!)
